A planned gearbox inspection is about far more than replacing worn components. Its purpose is to understand the condition of the gearbox, identify developing wear and make informed engineering decisions before the unit returns to service.
MIT recently completed the inspection and overhaul of a Twin Disc MGX5065A marine gearbox for a Thames River Authority at our Queenborough workshop. Although the gearbox arrived in a functioning condition, detailed strip inspection identified several components requiring further attention before overhaul could begin.

Outcome: Engineering assessment to determine which components could remain in service, which required repair and which required replacement.
Why The Gearbox Was Sent for Inspection
The gearbox was received as part of a planned overhaul programme.
Although the unit remained operational, a planned workshop inspection allowed our engineers to assess the internal condition of the transmission before hidden wear developed into a larger reliability issue.
Following receipt at Queenborough, the gearbox was dismantled in accordance with Twin Disc manufacturer’s procedures before every major component was inspected individually.
Inspection Findings
Once dismantled, the inspection showed a mixture of serviceable components alongside others requiring engineering intervention.
This is typical of many planned marine gearbox overhauls. The challenge isn’t simply identifying wear. It’s understanding what each finding means.
Gear Train and Splined Components
Inspection confirmed that:
- Input shaft splines remained in good condition.
- Output shaft splines remained serviceable.
- Gear teeth showed no significant wear requiring replacement.
These findings allowed the gear train to remain in service without unnecessary replacement.
Seal Running Surfaces
Inspection identified minor wear on both the input and output seal diameters.
Rather than replacing these components, our engineers machine polished the seal running surfaces to restore the correct sealing condition before reassembly.
This retained serviceable components while restoring the required sealing surface.
Clutch Assembly
Inspection of the clutch assembly revealed more significant wear.
The secondary clutch shaft showed excessive wear around the piston ring diameters.
Further inspection also identified wear on the secondary clutch sleeve, while the clutch piston required replacement due to wear within the piston ring sealing area.
The clutch plates had reached overhaul standard and were scheduled for replacement as part of the rebuild.

Additional Findings
The gearbox also arrived without the input drive coupling, output speed bracket or output speed sensor.
As these components could not be inspected, replacement formed part of the overhaul scope to ensure the gearbox returned to service in accordance with OEM requirements.
- Spline and hub wear caused by clutch chatter and load oscillation.
- Clutch plates show wear and glazing from repeated engagement cycles.
Engineering Judgement During Overhaul
One of the biggest misconceptions about gearbox overhauls is that every component showing wear should automatically be replaced.
In reality, engineering judgement is what determines the correct repair strategy.
During this inspection our engineers were able to:
- Retain serviceable gears and splined components.
- Restore seal running surfaces through machine polishing.
- Replace worn clutch components.
- Identify additional components requiring replacement where inspection was not possible.
The objective is always the same.
Retain what remains serviceable. Repair what can be restored. Replace only what has reached the end of its service life.
The Outcome
By carrying out a structured inspection before the gearbox returned to service, developing wear was identified under controlled workshop conditions.
Rather than relying on assumptions, the overhaul programme was based on the actual condition of each component.
This allows operators to make informed maintenance decisions, reduce unnecessary replacement costs and improve long-term gearbox reliability.
