Expert Marine Transmission Support When It Matters Most.
Rapid marine transmission support can make all the difference when problems occur at sea. Last week MIT’s marine engineers responded to an unusual service call at Queenborough after the owners of a passing vessel experienced a transmission alarm.
On Friday (10 July) morning, our Customer Service Manager received an unusual phone call. The owners of a passing vessel were making their way into Queenborough after a transmission alarm appeared on their display. Knowing they were close by, they wondered whether someone at MIT could take a quick look before they continued their journey.
As fate would have it, looking out of the office window, our Customer Service Manager could actually see the boat approaching the pontoon directly outside our Queenborough workshop.
Within minutes, one of our marine engineers was on board.
The vessel, a Marex 360 fitted with a Volvo Penta engine and drive package, had experienced an intermittent transmission alarm. By the time our engineer arrived, however, the warning had disappeared.
Rather than jumping to conclusions, a series of checks were carried out before the vessel was taken on a sea trial with the owners. Despite putting the boat through its paces, no faults could be reproduced and the transmission performed exactly as expected.
With no active fault to diagnose, the owners were advised to continue their journey while keeping an eye on the system.
Later, after arriving in Burnham-on-Sea, the alarm returned. Our Workshop Manager reviewed the findings and concluded that the issue was most likely related to the Volvo Penta engine management system or its associated controls, rather than the transmission itself.
Instead of asking the owners to return to Queenborough or carrying out unnecessary work, we recommended they contact French Marine, a trusted Volvo Penta specialist and long-standing MIT customer located close to their destination.
The recommendation enabled the owners to continue their journey knowing they were heading towards the right expertise.
The owners later thanked the team for the speed of the response and the honest advice they received:
“Thank you so much for your speedy response. Everything went fine getting to Burnham. I really appreciate your guys’ help and am really grateful that you don’t want to charge me!” – Janet Lodge, Owner of Asteria
Sometimes, the right answer isn’t repairing a fault—it’s helping customers find the quickest route to the right expertise.
The owners later thanked the team for their prompt response, honest advice and willingness to help at short notice.
